Gang that cheated in name of cancer research busted
Cybercrime Cell arrests five Indians and two Nigerians from three states for cheating city businessman out of Rs 65 lakh
The case of Makarba resident and businessman Sureshkumar Babulal Vora, 49, provided the breakthrough against this gang said to be involved in at least two cases in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu . As per Vora's complaint, the accused had fraudulently taken Rs 65 lakh by luring him in the name of business opportunities.
Police said that the accused created a Facebook ID named Alex Kerry and initiated an acquaintance with the complainant. Regarding their cancer research, they put forward the idea of Vora becoming their liaison and supplier of raw material for their alleged 'cancer research'.
Speaking to the complainant, they convinced Vora on the need for naproxen raw oil as research material and stated that they were looking for a new partner after their previous supplier had died. They enticed him to order the same from other accused. A first order of two litres at the rate of Rs 2.5 lakh per litre was placed. In this manner, the accused swindled him of Rs 65 lakh, the complaint stated.
During investigation, police found members operating from Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
Multiple teams were formed and sent to these states to apprehend them.
