NAINITAL: Even as monsoon rains wane across the state, dengue cases continue to rise in Nainital district. The worst affected are the plain areas of Ramnagar and Haldwani where the number of cases are reported to be in thousands. Nainital additional chief medical officer Rashmi Pant said that most number of cases have been reported from the urban areas of Haldwani block and very few cases have come up from Kotabagh and Bailparao areas. “According to our records, over 2,000 cases of dengue have been reported from the district till now. Most of these cases have come up from the Haldwani block as the temperature and population density of the area are suitable for the breeding of mosquitoes,” she said.

According to private practitioners, the actual number of cases may be more than the officials claim. “The official estimates are not accurate. There must be more than 10,000 dengue cases just in Haldwani. More than half-a-dozen have already died of the disease,” a doctor from Kathgodam told TOI on condition of anonymity.
