Chandigarh: At 17,000, elderly lead among vax takers

CHANDIGARH: With 34%, the elderly priority group is the highest of the total vaccinated people in the city. Vaccination senior citizens had started from March 1 and until March 13, as many as 17,321 elderly above the age of 60 have been vaccinated.

The UT health department has opened its maximum sites of 43 for vaccination of health care, frontline and the elderly group. At any given time daily, the elderly group is almost seven times more than others who get the shot.

“We have had a huge response from the elderly. They have been conscious and aware about the benefits of getting vaccinated. They had been approaching us much before the start of their slot,” said UT director health services Dr Amandeep Kang. She said “Most have been coming for on spot registration and without waiting much at our sites.”

While there are 12,910 health care workers and 12,722 frontline workers who have been vaccinated over the last three and two months, the elderly have far exceeded these numbers within two weeks.
