Ahmedabad: Dengue figures cross combined tally of malaria, chikungunya
Continuing the trend of 2021, year 2022 also had dengue as the most prevalent vector-borne disease in Gujarat, according to the state government’s health department data.
The state registered 6,682 dengue cases in 2022, which were higher than malaria (4,785) and chikungunya (1,046) cases combined. In 2021, against 9,000-odd cases of malaria and chikungunya combined, there were 10,983 dengue cases.
The year 2020 had higher cases of malaria, whereas in 2019, dengue topped the list with 18,455 cases.
According to the state health department, the first round of vector-borne diseases survey concluded on June 29 across the districts and municipal corporations. The second round, scheduled to begin on July 10, will have door-to-door surveys being held to identify mosquito breeding sites and carry out fogging, said officials.
“So far, 2.49 lakh blood samples have been collected, out of which 12 have tested positive. With the monsoon season active in the state, the surveillance will be strengthened in the coming days,” said a senior official. In Ahmedabad, till early October, 958 cases of malaria including 84 cases of falciparum, 1,352 cases of dengue and 212 cases of chikungunya were reported. The prevalence of dengue was higher among children.
