91 constables at Bengaluru training school test positive for coronavirus
At least 91 constables at the Police Training School (PTS) in Thanisandra and four from Magadi Road police station (west division) tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday.
With this, the total number of infected police personnel in Bengaluru has touched 1,026. While nine of them have died, 565 have been discharged. In all, 1,986 cops from across the state have contracted the virus so far and 13 have died.
Manjunath M Shukla, superintendent of police (SP) and principal of PTS, told TOI they are investigating the reason why 91 of their personnel tested positive at one go.
‘Outbreak came to light during random testing’
A senior PTS officer said one constable had tested positive a couple of weeks ago. “I am not sure whether his primary contacts were quarantined. The outbreak came to light during random testing which was carried out last week,” he said.
Around 400 constables who recently joined state police are undergoing training at the school, which is 10km from Yelahanka.
“The 91 patients have been shifted to designated facilities, including Victoria Hospital. Around 150 of their roommates have been quarantined,” a senior police officer said.
