20,000 people in Navi Mumbai may lose sight due to diabetes: Study
A new epidemic of serious eye problems can arise in Navi Mumbai if preventive measures are not taken soon, said doctors.
This was one of the findings in a survey done by the Advanced Eye Hospital in Sanpada who collected data from other hospitals in the city.
Diabetic retinopathy can lead to permanent blindness if not diagnosed on time. If detected at an early stage, the disease can be prevented and blindness can be reversed.
"Diabetes puts one at a greater risk of developing various eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retina swelling or detachment of the retina and permanent blindness," said retina surgeon Dr Yogesh Patil.
The key to prevent further worsening of existing eye conditions and various eye-related complications caused due to diabetes lies in the proper management of one's blood sugar levels and getting regular eye checkups, said doctors.
"Sadly, despite being amenable to total cure; diabetic retinopathy continues to be a major cause of blindness throughout the world. Lack of awareness and poor diligence contribute to the problem. Uncontrolled diabetes causes changes that destroy vision," said diabetologist Dr Sanjay Khare.
He explained that a detailed evaluation is mandatory every year after diagnosis.
