Trichy: Government doctors boycott OP treatment demanding pay hike
Tuesday’s boycott was part of the the series of protests by government doctors in Tamil Nadu to demand pay hike on a par with central government doctors.
“A total of 460 doctors including postgraduates resorted to the protest. We treated only emergency patients but boycotted outpatient treatment and elective surgeries,” said state treasurer of service doctors and postgraduates association (SDPGA), Dr T Aruleeswaran.
Tuesday’s boycott was part of the the series of protests by government doctors in Tamil Nadu to demand pay hike on a par with central government doctors. They insisted on revising the salary and promotion at 4th, 9th, 13th and 20th years of service. They lamented that their salaries matched that of nurses in central government.
They also demanded the recruitment of PG doctors through counselling instead of direct recruitment.
The doctors also took exception to the proposal to bring down the number of doctors in government hospitals citing Medical Council of India (MCI) norms.
Stating that it will take a toll on the quality of the treatment, they demanded the state to appoint doctors proportionate to the number of patients.
On July 18, doctors in various government hospitals boycotted the outpatient department for two hours.
