Nehru Hospital becomes first platinum-rated govt hospital in country
Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has conferred its highest Platinum Certification for Extension of Nehru Hospital building under its IGBC-NB (Green Healthcare) rating system.
Lot of green concepts and techniques have been used by Central Public works Department in this project.
Issues like infection, epidemics, water efficiency, energy efficiency, consumer waste and in general conservation of natural resources has been accorded top priority in this project. Most importantly, these concepts will enhance patients's health, recovery and well-being.
The extension of Nehru Hospital building has been designed to arrest outside excessive heat and cold to let inside the building, but at the same time, it allows enough day-light to percolate inside. The envelope has been designed with double walls to reduce heat gain during summer and to reduce heat loss to cooler ambient during winters. The roof is insulated to reduce solar heat gain and application of high solar reflective paint to reflect heat to ambient also helps in providing thermal comfort to patients and to staff members.

The high performance double glazing reduces heat gain associated with day-light. For the non-sunny hours, efficient LED lighting has been introduced in all spaces, which is more than 40% efficient.
Circadian lighting changes the ambient colour as per the outdoor lighting colour temperature and greatly helps in aligning patient’s body clock with the natural one, which influences recovery.
"Indoor air quality also plays a major role. At all locations, air quality monitoring sensors have been installed for online monitoring and display of air quality, " said Rajeev Sao, superintendent engineer, CPWD.
