MIMS first in Kerala to offer state-of-the-art kidney stone treatment
Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) has become the first hospital in Kerala to introduce micro-technology in endo-urological stone treatment through the use of a new generation of minimally invasive percutaneous kidney stone treatment (MIP) systems.
The pioneering new procedure, currently available at five hospitals in India and only one in Kerala - using a modular minimally invasive pressure-controlled PCNL System - is helping transform the way kidney stone operations are carried out by urologists at MIMS. From a patient’s point of view, the procedure is quicker, cheaper and less painful. It is also one that has a dramatic impact on recovery times.
Dr P Harigovind, senior consultant urologist, MIMS said , “We are pleased to be the most well-equipped hospital in the state with the setting up of minimally invasive percutaneous (MIP) kidney stone treatment. The procedure has many advantages including shorter hospital stays, lesser pain and almost invisible scarring for patients,” he said, adding that as far as the doctors are concerned, it also gives many advantages such as the capacity to expand the spectrum of percutaneous stone treatment, single step dilation, automatic pressure control, stone extraction in the irrigation flow and the possibility to close the access tract using a gelatin-thrombin matrix in conjunction with ultrasound-guided puncture of kidney which ensures effective stone treatment with fewer complications.
