State finance minister P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan made the announcement during the budget session of the Tamil Nadu assembly on Monday. The new infrastructure will cater to the medical needs of people in Trichy and surrounding districts.
Sources from MGMGH told TOI that the hospital is likely to get the new building constructed on the campus itself. A senior doctor said that the choice of location for the building is yet to be decided. The parking space is likely to be utilised for the purpose of the construction.
An area of 26,000sqft has been earmarked for the construction of the ground floor plus six-floor building. Calling it a broad specialty hospital, the facility has been planned to house the departments of medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, dermatology, blood bank, centralised laboratory. Some other facilities including X-ray rooms may also come up in the new building.
The hospital would get additional 600 beds with the construction of the proposed building in addition to the existing 1,600-odd beds which remain always occupied.
A senior doctor said that MGMGH already has a six storey superspecialty and trauma care block constructed at a cost of 100 crore. The building was inaugurated by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in February 2014.
However, the hospital administration accommodated regular departments of various branches due to lack of space in other old buildings on the campus which sprawls on a 25 acre land. KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) which is attached to MGMGH is situated at Periya Milaguparai on Collector’s Office Road.
