Manipal: Heart transplant clinic inaugurated at Kasturba Hospital
The clinic at Manipal will function from Monday to Wednesday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Simultaneously, heart transplantation clinic was launched at KMC Hospital, B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru and it will function on all Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
Inaugurating the clinic, Muthana said, “Heart failure occurs when heart muscle is weak and cannot pump enough blood for oxygen supply.” Though it is difficult to live in such condition, approaching heart failure clinic will enable patients to obtain proper guidance from experts and there by leading better quality of life. The clinics in developed countries are known to improve treatment outcome among the patients, Muthana said.
Heart failure clinic at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal will offer personalised care in safe environment. Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, said the clinic provides comprehensive care for patients with end stage heart failure, patients with left ventricular dysfunction or those with issues regarding implanted cardiac assisted devices. Patients with heart failure caused by cytotoxic drugs will be attended to in the clinic.
Dr Tom Devasia, head of interventional cardiology, Kasturba Hospital Manipal said patients who receive timely attention and care in the clinic will have the advantage of identifying the precise condition and thereby be able to lead a better quality of life for a longer duration. Those patients who are eligible for cardiac transplantation would have better chance of availing heart transplantation as and when donor hearts are available.
