New Delhi: Daily cases in Delhi crossed the 2,500-mark for the first time after 61 days on Wednesday amid a worrying resurgence of the infection in the past two weeks.
The capital recorded a total of 2,509 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, taking the tally to over 1.79 lakh, while the toll mounted to 4,481. Nineteen fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours, authorities said. The last time Delhi recorded more than 2,500 fresh cases was on July 3 (2,520 cases). The city had on Tuesday reported 2,312 new cases.
The number of active cases in the city, which had come down to below 10,705 on July 31, has once again gone up to 16,502, data shared by the state health department shows. The positivity rate — number of positive cases from those tested — is 8.7%, latest data shows, while the recovery rate is around 88%.
The increase in cases has led to surge in hospital admissions too. As many as 4,418 (31%) of 14,130 Covid beds were occupied in city hospitals on Wednesday at 10pm, according to data shared on the Delhi Corona app. The occupancy of ICU beds with ventilators and without ventilators was 43% and 53%, respectively.
