Ahmedabad: HCG Hospitals Ahmedabad recently conducted Gujarat’s first minimally invasive navigation-guided Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedure for the treatment of Osteoid Osteoma, a non-cancerous bone tumor.

An 18-year-old patient from Vadodara endured pelvic pain for over a year, worsening at night, without a diagnosis. Comprehensive imaging at HCG Hospitals Ahmedabad revealed a rare pelvic Osteoid Osteoma. The medical team used navigation-guided Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive procedure that precisely targets and destroys tumor cells with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.

Explaining the procedure, Dr. Mayur Kamani, Ortho-Onco Surgeon at HCG Hospitals Ahmedabad, said, “The patient was suffering from severe pain that had been affecting his quality of life. The tumor’s location in the pelvic bone made it more complex, as it was surrounded by vital structures. Hence, we opted for navigation-guided Radiofrequency Ablation because it allowed us to accurately target the tumor while minimizing risks and avoiding the need for extensive surgical intervention.”

“Using this method, we inserted a needle electrode through a small incision, which was guided directly to the tumor site. Once positioned, high-frequency heat was applied to the tumor, effectively ablating it while preserving the surrounding bone and tissues. Unlike traditional surgery, which often requires the removal of surrounding bone, this approach is minimally invasive, ensuring a quicker recovery time and fewer complications.

“The patient experienced immediate relief from pain and was able to return to normal activities within days. Follow-up care confirmed complete recovery, with no complications or pain remaining, significantly improving his quality of life.”

Dr. Rozil Gandhi, Interventional Radiologist, HCG Hospitals Ahmedabad, said, “Navigation-guided Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a transformative advancement in the treatment of benign bone tumors. This technology offers patients faster recovery times and minimal discomfort.”
