First stenting for urethral stricture at Jaipur hospital
A private hospital claimed that they have conducted first stenting for urethral strictures in the state.
Fortis Escorts Hospital's senior consultant, Urology, Dr Sandeep Gupta, said, "Urethral stricture is the condition when the tube through which urine comes out of the bladder gets narrowed. This could happen because of previous surgical complications (Transurethral Resection of Prostate)."
He said, "Because of associated co-morbid conditions, a lengthy open surgery would have posed threats to his life because of long operative time and prolonged recovery period. However, as the problem adversely impacted his (patient's) quality of life, it needed to be addressed immediately."
Therefore, the patient was provided with the novel treatment of placing urethral stent in the strictured area or the narrowed segment of the urethra. This stent will keep the narrowed segment open and the patient can pass urine with full stream. This is similar to stent placement in coronary artery of heart to remove the blockage through angioplasty.
