Biomedical waste greet patients at Kanpur's Ursula and LLR hospitals
Most of the dengue patients are undergoing treatment in Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital and Ursula Hospital. Unhygienic conditions are prevailing in and around the two hospitals, adding to the woes of patients.
One can see garbage heaps in a dumping yard that is situated in the LLR Hospital.
The heap also contain biomedical waste like used needles, syringes, human anatomical waste, cotton bandages and discarded medicines.
“The area stinks badly. We come here for treatment and not for getting sick,” the attendant of a patient said.
The condition outside an entrance of Upper India Sugar Exchange Hospital in Rawatpur area is pathetic. KMC dumping yard, which is most of the time full of garbage heaps, is situated just outside the Jachcha-Bachcha hospital. Chief superintendent of LLR Hospital, Dr RC Gupta said, “We understand that the hospital premises needs to neat and clean. For the disposal of bio-medical waste, we have a tie-up with a private company. However, removal of ground garbage is the responsibility of KMC.”
KMC official Rajiv Shukla said that municipal vehicles collect garbage from outside and inside the hospital regularly. “We regularly collect garbage from outside LLR as well as Ursula hospital. Medical waste collection is not our responsibility. Grounded waste is collected by us,” he maintained.
The hospitals continue to remain dirty amidst this blame game.
