Aurangabad: MGM hospital to get a modern ICU

Aurangabad: Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) Hospital is all set to get a modern modular intensive care unit (ICU) from Saturday.

The charitable hospital already has nine ICUs and the one unveiled on Saturday would be the 10th ICU of the hospital.

Pravin Suryawanshi, deputy dean at MGM Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) said, “The 11-bed ICU aims at providing state of the art care for patients in Aurangabad so that they don’t have to go to other cities for critical care treatment.”

MGMMCH dean Rajendra Bohra said that the ICU infection control system will save expenses of the patient. “The cardiac output monitor at the ICU can help diagnose what is causing the BP to rise or fall which will help in treatment and early recovery,” Bohra said.

The MGM’s Medical Centre and Research Institute (MCRI) ICU facilitates also has ventilators and monitor for each of the 11 beds. It also has a signaling system that prevents people from entering into the patient cabin without cleaning their hand with a sanitizer installed outside the room. The other equipment available at the unit includes dialysis machine, sonography machine and X-ray machine.

Anand Nikalje, director ICU unit said that the unit ensures a thorough check on hospital acquired infections due to its built-in mechanisms. One can only enter the unit after the operator shows an access card to the sensor.

It has a negative pressure room for quarantine patients suffering with diseases like swine flu which prevents their infection from spreading to other patients. The unit also has a positive pressure room for patients with compromised immune systems in which air flows out of the room instead of coming in. It helps prevent any airborne microorganisms to reach the patient.

The ICU will be inaugurated on Saturday by MGM Trust secretary Ankushrao Kadam and a workshop for disease management in ICU will be held for doctors in Marathwada on June 15 at the hospital.
