KOCHI: To ensure that young medical professionals are motivated to join the government service, the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has submitted a proposal to the government stating that super-speciality doctors need to be appointed at general hospitals and speciality doctors at district and Taluk hospitals.

At the moment, there is a tendency to appoint super-speciality and speciality doctors at primary health centres (PHC) where they do not get to practise what they have learnt.

“There are 421 vacancies in government hospitals. But young doctors are not willing to join the profession as the starting salary of an MBBS and super specialist is the same – Rs 51,600. A specialist or super specialist gets paid much higher in the private hospital,” said KGMOA president Dr Madhu V.
