LUCKNOW: Living with a rare 2kg tumour in his throat, 55-year-old Somai from Basti has been given a new life by doctors.

On Friday, he underwent surgery in the ear, nose and throat (ENT) department at King George's Medical University (KGMU).

Having carried the tumour in his throat for 20 years, battling much discomfort and pain, Somai reached KGMU on Thursday. The tumour had started to grow in size over the past two years. "The tumour was in his submandibular glands which produce saliva. Generally, even if there is tumour in these glands, it is small, but Somai had a 2kg tumour, which is rare. The surgery was also tricky in such a situation, since vessels carrying blood to and from the brain to other parts of the body pass through this region," said Dr Omkar, a part of the operating team.

Led by Dr Sunil Kumar of the department, the team of Dr Priyanka, Dr Krishna, Dr Ampu and anesthetist Dr Ehsan Siddiqui took four hours to complete the process. Somai is currently awaiting stitches to be removed.
