“One should recognize the warning signs or symptoms of gynecologic cancer against what is normal for that person. The symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, pelvic pain or pressure, abdominal back pain and itching or burning of the vulva,” Dr Hazra added.
“The symptoms also include colour change of vulva or other changes to skin, such as rash, sores or warts. If one has unusual vaginal bleeding, she should visit a doctor. One should also see a doctor if any symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” he said.
Head of radiology department of Patna Medical College and Hospital Dr P N Pandit blamed unhealthy lifestyle for breast cancer. “Late marriage, having children at a later age and not breastfeeding children are some of the reasons for breast cancer,” he said.
Talking about unhealthy or adulterated food, Dr Pandit said, “Unhealthy food is a known carcinogen. Chemicals such as DDT and pesticides that permeate the green vegetables or fruits cause cancer. There is no escape from adulterated food these days. Even the fresh vegetables have been exposed to some or other form of chemicals.”
Doctors also stressed on the need for better palliative care for cancer patients in the country. Chief medical officer of BSF Training Academy, Gwalior, Dr Savita Butola said the aim of palliative care was to improve the quality of life for patients and provide support to their family members. “The care should begin with diagnosis and continue through treatment and follow-up care,” she said.
