At 1.1 lakh, daily Covid cases at 1-month low; toll still high at 670

Fresh cases of Covid-19 continued to fall sharply across the country, with less than 1.1 lakh new infections recorded on Saturday, while the deaths from the virus crossed 650 for the fourth time this week.

India reported 107,731 fresh cases on Saturday, the lowest daily tally in a month since January 5 and down from 1,28,338 on the previous day, as per TOI’s Covid database. The highest daily cases this week were 1,72,931 reported on Wednesday, which itself was way below the previous week's peak of 2,87,198.

All states and UTs, with the exception of J&K, reported a lower number of new cases as compared with the previous day. In J&K, cases rose marginally from 1,429 on Friday to 1,606 but numbers through the week have been declining in the UT.

For the third day running, Kerala logged a dip in cases. Kerala, however, continued to report a rising number of recent deaths.

Overall, India reported 670 fatalities on Saturday, close to the third-wave high of 679 recorded on Friday.
